Rethinking it all?

I keep feeling like if I can just get the mix right I can get back to running well without injury for a long time but I just have to come up with the right mix. I have obviously tried just about every technique that won't work so I have to be close to a successful training program. Then this week Runners World came out with a listing of Lance's training program. Now if I know anything about Chris Carmichael I know that Lance's training program cannot be listed on one sheet of paper but I am sure they summarized it fairly and it boiled down to this.
2 rest days, 2 runs, 2 bike rides and on the weekend either a bike ride or run but not both.
What if I could really perform well on 2 bike rides and 3 runs a week? That would be amazing. I would be running less so hurt less and in a better state of mind. The logic is there Lance is busy and not a pro he just likes to exercise. It is not his job. He has lots of other obligations. Just like me.
The big deal is that lately that is pretty much the plan I have been on but feeling it is inadequate while at the same time I have been running times that are within 20 seconds of as good as I really ever run except for the occasional pr day. So at this point it is not as much of a change of training but mental state to believe that what I am doing is a good training program that will succeed.

Case in point Saturday was a run I have done at least 5 or 6 times now. The Palace Saloon 5k. I ran 19:38 and am happy to report that most of the guys that I usually run in a pack with I was able to edge out. One guy in particular I think I have only beaten once before I was really happy to beat until I found out that he is 1 week from running Boston and was not going to use up his best race in a 5k. This year I have run 5 events of 5k and every one was under 20 except one that I hobbled through just for points so we'll call that a throw away race. I have to be happy with my results and the lower level of training must be working.

One thing that I have found is that I am racing for a mid 19 time instead of a mid 18 time and because of that I am having much more success with running consistent races. Hitting the first mile in 6:10 makes the race so much easier than hitting it in 6:00

Wednesday I had a really good Food Lion Bike Ride after the long weekend I have not felt that good in ages
Thursday I ran 3 miles
Saturday I got in about 5.5 miles
Sunday I biked with the triathletes for 65 and then we did a 2 mile run after. I don't know why they bother to run after the ride but it is kind of a nice finish to the day so I run with them
Monday - I just ran 3.5. I got a filling today so I felt tired and took a nap after work before slogging through the distance in a tie for my all time slow course time of 29 minutes.

Over and out
