I was out at FSU about a month ago to see a very impressive 5k get run in 13:58 by Mark Carrol. This was the first 5k I have seen break 14 minutes and it was amazing. At the same time one our ex-FSU runners Sean Burris ran alone almost the whole way for a 14:40 which I thought looked really hard he was in no mans land the whole way but still gutted it out.
Then I see that this weekend at
Moving from 14:40 to 14:09 or 13:58 to 13:28 is not like moving from 20:30 down to 20:00. You are talking about guys who are flat hauling ass finding a way to move even faster. Very impressive. If you still don’t get it let me throw it at you this way.
A 5k on the track is 12.5 laps. We all know that a 4 minute mile is kind of the benchmark of badass. So lets assume you could run 4 minute miles for a 5k. Or 1 minute per lap. That would get you a 12:30 5k. So what Mark did was run 58 seconds slower than maintaining 4 minute per mile pace for 3.1 miles and Sean was only 99 seconds from it. That means 64.64 seconds per lap for Mark and 67.9 seconds per lap for Sean.
Are you starting to feel the burn yet.
